Operation Osmin is a television series produced by American cable network nuvoTV. The fitness reality show debuted on July 4, 2011 as part of the relaunch of nuvoTV from the former Sí TV. Each episode focuses on out-of-shape challengers who participate in grueling, unconventional training from fitness trainer Osmin Hernandez, who was part of an elite Cuban military unit. On Operation Osmin, the trainer has 30 days to get his challengers into the best shape of their lives by using his signature “the world is your gym” technique. This involves training in unusual places, like busy streets or parking lots, sometimes combined with extreme weather conditions like storms. Participants are also required to maintain a diet of fish, salad and water. The first season of Operation Osmin aired from July to August 2011 and consisted of ten episodes. Season one registered as the highest rated original series ever produced for the network. Season 2 premiered on nuvoTV on January 13, 2012 consisting of 13 episodes. Operation Osmin was created by Eric Evangelista and Osmin Hernandez. The program is produced by Evangelista's New York-based production company Hot Snakes Media for nuvoTV.
Operation Alphabet was a daily educational television program designed to teach literacy to adults. Produced in Philadelphia by WFIL-TV in association with the Philadelphia Junior Chamber of Commerce and the National Association for Public School Adult Education, the program was hosted by Alexander Shevlin of the Philadelphia Board of Education. The series was designed to teach the basics of reading and writing to adults who were illiterate, using subjects that are relevant to adults; the program especially benefited immigrants, prisoners and those in the military. Operation Alphabet was not only one of the first educational programs to deal with literacy, it was one of the first to be aimed at an adult population, rather than towards children. Two series of the program were produced—the first, aimed for reading at a fourth-grade level, was produced in 1961; a second series, for reading at an eighth-grade level, was filmed in 1964. Each series was designed for daily, weekday telecasts. In Philadelphia, WFIL-TV broadcast the series at 6 AM on weekdays—the station opted to place the program in that early time slot, so that adults could watch the program and take the coursework before going to work. The early hour also benefited the viewers, as they could learn to read without fear of embarrassment.
Operation Junkyard debuted in fall 2002 as part of the Discovery Kids Saturday morning programming schedule. Essentially a spin-off of TLC's popular series Junkyard Wars, OP/JY featured teams of teens that were challenged to build gadgets out of junk in six hours. Teams featured on the show include the Rummaging Robots and Jurassic Junkers, and the teams were tasked to build gadgets like water bailing machines, mud scooters, and remote control battleships. At the beginning of each show the challenge of the day was revealed and teams attempted to collect "bodgits" by completing small challenges. "Bodgits" were helpful advantages that teams could earn, including time with the on-set engineer or special parts for use in their build.
Operation Transformation is an Irish health and fitness programme. The show is a cross-media event broadcast via radio, web and television on RTÉ 2fm, RTÉ.ie and RTÉ One since 2008. Prior to this it had been limited to radio but has since expanded onto the web and television. The fifth series, which began in January 2012, is hosted by Kathryn Thomas with the radio element provided by RTÉ Radio One's The John Murray Show. Initially presented by reporter Evelyn O'Rourke, the event saw six hopefuls, selected by Gerry Ryan on his radio show, attempt to reshape their lives as they are supported and guided by a panel of experts in the fields of fitness, nutrition and psychology in order to reach their individual goals. O'Rourke performed the role of "cheerleader" to her companion Gerry Ryan's "ringmaster". There are weekly updates on television, daily updates on radio and a 24/7 live webcam on a dedicated site within RTÉ.ie for a period of seven weeks. Each year the event culminates in a grand finale, in which the six contestants present their new selves to their loved ones and the viewing and listening public. Gerry Ryan himself said on air that he was two stone lighter following the 2008 event than he was before it began. Several politicians took part in 2010. Gerry Ryan died suddenly in 2010, so the show ended up in the hands of Kathryn Thomas and RTÉ Radio One's The John Murray Show from 2011 onwards.
